Intern Stories

Chris

Auckland

Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) & Bachelor of Commerce (Conjoint) | Engineering Science, Finance, Management

I did not expect interns to be trusted to develop their own ideas and tools with freedom but also useful guidance from Aqeel. This responsibility and challenge has made the Tidy intern experience feel very fulfilling and ensured that I have learnt a lot of new skills.

Chris first heard about Tidy through BESA, which is a student group for Biomedical Engineering and Engineering Science students at the University of Auckland. With Tidy being one of their sponsors and positive experiences from previous interns, he was encouraged to apply. Chris then met Kevin at an Internship Night held by BESA and had the opportunity to discuss the pathways for Engineering Science students within Tidy.

“This conversation really motivated me to pursue an internship with Tidy.”

The most interesting project Chris worked on was developing tools for onboarding new customers and monitoring product usage among existing customers. His favourite project was developing a dashboard which displays user pathways through the Tidy website with the use of a parallel categories plot.

Chris was most surprised by the freedom that interns are provided within the PROBE team.

“I did not expect interns to be trusted to develop their own ideas and tools with freedom but also useful guidance from Aqeel. This responsibility and challenge has made the Tidy intern experience feel very fulfilling and ensured that I have learnt a lot of new skills.”

The most memorable moments of his internship have come with his fellow interns. In particular, their daily competitions at Wordle, Connections, and challenging ourselves to cook the most absurd meals with the office sandwich press.

“Our biggest achievement in the kitchen was undoubtedly making steak sandwiches after cooking a steak perfectly using nothing but the sandwich press.”

 Chris describes his internship as:

Fulfilling: Working in the PROBE team has provided me with a wide range of different projects to work on, thus allowing me to develop many different skills and gain valuable experience.

Fun: The office culture has made every day interesting and unique, leading to an enjoyable day every time you go into the office.

Impactful: The work interns conduct at Tidy feels important and useful. Tools we have developed and work we have conducted have proven to be used in actual business activities, leading to a feeling that we have made a tangible impact on the company.

Chris’s advice for future interns is:

“Ask questions. There are so many insights that can be gained by talking to the people around you who have different experiences and perspectives relating to the problems you are trying to solve.”

He is most excited to continue developing his problem-solving skills.

“This internship at Tidy has given me the opportunity to tackle a wide range of challenges in a real-world setting.”

For the year ahead, Chris is most looking forward to participating in a variety of projects with Tidy as he completes his final year of Engineering at the University of Auckland.
