Intern Stories

Nathan

University of Auckland

Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Commerce | Engineering Science, Finance and Accounting

Tidy has a great team of people which are a pleasure to work with. I have also learnt heaps about business and business processes, which I am extremely grateful for.

In his first year of university, Nathan attended an Engineering Careers Fest event. Already knowing that he wanted to specialise in engineering science, he explored the event stalls in search of companies that typically hired students in his targeted specialisation.

It was here that he stumbled across Tidy. Kevin Mann (CEO of Tidy) was at the event with a company representative and Nathan had a great conversation with them about engineering science pathways and projects at Tidy.

“I was struck by the in-depth conversation, and from then on, I made it my goal to work at Tidy,” says Nathan.

Fast forward to Nathan’s second year of university, he reconnected with Kevin at a student club’s careers event. They had another memorable chat about business growth, company culture, Tidy's current projects, and their shared interest in boating and sailing.

“Kevin asked me if I was interested in becoming an intern at Tidy that year. I was excited at the opportunity and agreed to send through my resume,” Nathan recalls.

After a few calls with Kevin and the Tidy team, Nathan began his internship at the end of 2023.

While he has worked on multiple interesting projects, a standout has been working on the “Tidy to Run Tidy” project.

“It involved defining software requirements for Tidy 2 (Tidy’s next generation product) around CRM and project management through internal research, competitive analysis with alternative software products, and business analytics skills. It has been incredibly rewarding to see the products that I have designed take shape as they are being built by the engineering team.”

In working at Tidy, the most surprising thing for Nathan has been the enjoyable work and intern culture.

“Tidy has a great team of people which are a pleasure to work with. I have also learnt heaps about business and business processes, which I am extremely grateful for.”

His most memorable experience was preparing a proposal document for one of Tidy's customers.

“I had to quickly learn about the business's production process, current pain-points, and integration with Tidy. I then had to propose a solution for how additional features and functionality can be used to improve their production processes. This was a great challenge to rise to, and I really got a lot out of it.”

Nathan’s advice for the next cohort of interns is to chase after areas they are passionate about in the business.

“If there is something that you are particularly interested in, communicate to get involved in any ongoing projects that you could make a valuable addition to. Working on projects that really interest you is important to ensure a great work environment and intern experience.”

His internship with Tidy enhanced his ability to hold meetings and present to groups of people. This was something Nathan gained a lot of experience in through the projects he was involved in and is a skill he wants to continue developing.

In the coming year, Nathan looks forward to getting involved in different projects at Tidy, learning more about finance from his university courses, and doing some travelling.
